The use of rotating electromagnetic arcs in switchgear, (for electricity distribution systems), and in arc heaters, (for the chemical processing industry), have been limited to small volumes and low current operation (<30kA) in order to avoid threatening the electromechanical integrity of the magnetic field producing structure. This project seeks to explore methods for overcoming these limitations by introducing more control of the magnetic field and therefore of the arc discharge both at low and high current operation in order to maintain the performance of the device throughout its operating range. This will be achieved through the design of magnetic field shaping coils, the use of power electronic switiching of coil sections to cater for different fault current levels and the use of coil excitation separate from the fault arc current. Device scaling laws will also be established.
