An existing current sensor design, based on Faraday rotation, and researched at Liverpool has led to commercially manufactured units being utilised successfully for transformer tap changer monitoring in the field. With the existing sensor the resolution of 0.1% required by the electric power industry can only be achieved for rotations of the plane of polarisation of the optical signal, over a range of +/- 2 degrees. This project intends to explore methods for taking advantage of the good vibration and temperature immunity of the sensor whilst extending its high resolution to cover as much of the 10A to 70kA current range as possible. This will be achieved by increasing the chromatic modulation depth of the system, by improving the chromatic detection of the Faraday rotated optical signature and by exploring the use of wavelength encoders to provide a wavelength range which would always remain within the +/= 2 degrees part of the range of the existing sensor. The chromatic outputs are expected to be quite complex and so artificial intelligence techniques may be incorporated to interpret the signals.
