Summary on Grant Application Form
Reinforced asphalt is a recently introduced material for which no recognised design procedure exists, involving the inclusion of grid reinforcement within the asphalt layers of a road. The project will involve a detailed laboratory study of its behaviour, an assessment of a number of road sites where it has been used (sampling, in situ testing), and liaison with an asphalt contractor and a paver manufacturer on installation matters. From these studies a deterioration model will be formulated depending on reinforcement properties, depth, layer thicknesses, etc, leading to the development of a design guide. The key benefit would be to allow the highways industry to make appropriate use of a material which is not currently well understood, thereby saving on maintenance costs and reducing delays to users.
