Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research aims to establish a sound basis for novel, non-metallic joints in structural members in medium- to large-scale timber buildings. The joints will be manufactured in wood composites using fibre-reinforced plastics in the form of plates, dowels and other structural elements such as T-pieces. The initial stages of research willinclude the selection, design, stress analysis and finite element analysis of proposed joints. This phase will be followed by prototype manufacture on a laboratory basis, static and dynamic testing and non-destructive evaluation of (a) joint elements and (b) timber members containing joints. It is likely that a successful range of environmentally-stable, lightweight non-metallic joints for timber structures will result from the research. These non-metallic joints will be exploited by industry as new products in an expanding marketplace to the benefit of UK timber engineering. The results of this work will be incorporated into codes of practice, standards and Eurocodes.
