Summary on Grant Application Form
Our overall aim is the development of all-nitride epitaxial multilayers in order to study the electrical and magnetic properties of superconductor/insulator multilayer structures and to enable high frequency exploitation of NbN-based devices. In contrast with metal/oxide multilayers, all-nitride systems can be grown rapidly, with no limitation on interface and layer thicknesses, using continuous sample rotation. In our current 2 year SERC grant we have successfully demonstrated high quality single and double NbN/AlN tunnel junctions; in order to achieve full multilayer structures we need to continue our highly successful programme of materials characterisation using TEM, atomic force and scanning tunnelling microscopy. True Josephen-coupled multilayer structures will permit a wide range of basic experiments important to the understanding of anisotropic high temperature superconductors, ranging from the flux pinning and magnetisation properties of unpatterned multilayers, to critical current locking in arrays of junctions and vortex coupling and interference in distributed junction structures. More applied goals include the fabrication of all-epitaxial structures for high frequency, high power flux-flow oscillators.
