Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective is to develop practical techniques for the automated and computer assissted generation of complete process flowsheets. In the course of the work we will extend techniques available for initial design of simple flowsheets, for distillation sequences with and without energy integration, and for heat exchange networks to provide a comprehensive suite of algorithms for generating and optimizing complete complex flowsheets involving reactors, non-ideal separation systems and global energy integration.A major element will be the extension of the applicants' previous work. This has involved the development of a general purpose synthesis based on discretization of certain design variables, and the solution of the resulting integer program by specially developed search procedures. The outcome of the programme will be a demonstration suite of software capable of generating alternative process structures to meet a range of cost and non-cost criteria of quality and affordability. Such a suite has potentially very wide application in all areas of the process industries: chemical, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and minerals.
