Current water industry strategy for maintaining urban wasterwater drainage infrastructure is to systematically rehabilitate critical sewers, which represent about 20% of the U.S. network. The remaining 80% of non-critical sewers are dealt with by reactive maintenance only and a simple, cheap robust but cost effective systematic rehabilitation strategy is required to identify which is the sewers is in most need of attention. A methodology will be developed by considering existing performance data by representative drainage areas and highlighting sensitive locations though the use of relational databases and Geographical Information Systems. Risk analysis techniques which consider the product of the probability of an event occuring multiplied by its consequences will be used to develop a sewer critically number permitting the ranking CCTV surveys and the methodologies developed will have applications for the maintenance and rehabilitation of other infrastructure assets.
