Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to establish protocols for the rapid, efficient synthesis of dendrimers using cheap building blocks and reagents already utilised in the chemical industry. The Mannich reaction is chosen for this purpose since it is versatile, high yielding, uses cheap reagents, can be carried out in common solvents or the melt, and aproduces no reaction by-products apart from water. A divergent synthetic strategy is proposed for synthetic feasibility, leading towards the ultimate goal of a dendrimer synthesis carried out as a one pot reaction by iterative additions of building blocks and reagents.
