Summary on Grant Application Form
The central question to be addressed by this investigation is:Do the properties of monodisperse dendrimers merit the multi-step syntheses required or would an easily prepared hyperbranched polymer equivalent serve the same purpose? To answer this question a range of dendrimers and hyperbranched polymeric analogues will be synthesised, as follows:1. aryl polyesters; 2. alkyl polyesters 3. aryl urethanes; 4. alkyl urethanes. These targets were selected to include: known compounds (aryl polyester dendrimers and hyperbranched aryl poly-esters and -urethanes), to permit us to quickly start the comparative study; unknown compounds which will be prepared via known routes (alkyl polyester dendrimers and hyperbranched alkyl poly-esters and -urethanes); and unknown compounds which will be prepared by a new method (alkyl- and aryl-urethane dendrimers), to provide a vehicle for development of new synthetic methodology. The relative performances of the dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers will be assessed in terms of their viscosity (physical property) and their ability to bind guests in host-guest complexes (chemical property).
