Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to synthesise new porphyrin polymers, all of which will be highly conjugated and exhibit unusual electronic, optical and magnetic properties. We will develop synthetic methodologies for building polymers and oligomers with defined lengths and sequences, and with porphyrins connected by a variety of conjugated links. We will attach pyridine groups perpendicular to the covalent backbone; these will co-ordinate to the metal centres of other metalloporphyrin polymer strands. Thus supramolecular chemistry will be used to control both the properties and the synthesis of these polymers. Rational self-assembly will dictate their conformations. Self-replication will direct their synthesis. This will open up ways of controlling polymer synthesis which have previously been used only by living organisms. We will create new materials for a diversity of potential applications in electronics and electro-optics.
