Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme of research, developing from recent work at the highest international level, will involve a uniquely powerful combination of chemical understanding with: instrument refinement, as in fibre-optic LEED; continuing novel instrument development, as in single crystal calorimetry and surface IR chemiluminescence spectroscopy; and state-of-the-art ab initio computational simulations; to tackle, and hence control, a range of problems associated with the chemical reactivity of solid structure, bonding and dynamics at surfaces, within an advanced theoretical framework. On the other, complex chemical and structural problems associated with heterogeneous catalysis will be tackled by the development of model catalysts combined with measurements on practical systems I controlled atmospheres and under liquids.
