Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to use the time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) technique for 3D imaging and metrology. The technique is based on detectors capable of measuring single photons, and as such is capable of highly sensitive detection - essential if the instrument is to be used for a wide variety of sample surfaces, composed of different reflectivities, at different distances etc. Detection systems based on TCSPC are capable of picosecond instrumental responses. This inherent fast response has already been tested in conjunction with simple data analysis techniques to show that time-of-flight measurements can give range accuracies of > 30um. This project aims to [1] investigate the applicability of the TCSPC technique under various conditions [2] construct a fully integrated demonstrator capable of 3D imaging of large surfaces [>>1m3] at XYZ resolutions of tens of micrometers; [3] develop the appropriate software to control and calibrate the instrument and to process the data and carry out the image analysis required for construction of a matching 3D model.
