Summary on Grant Application Form
Support is requested for a replacement X-ray diffractometer, to provide crystal information in relation to the synthetic and structural research in the Department of Chemistry. The major themes are:1. Structures of metal complexes (particularly of macrocycles) with potential for application as oxygen carriers, for small molecule fixation, for polymerisation (through several approaches), as liquid crystals, and as ceramic or semiconductor precursors. 2. Biotransformations and study of enzymatic reactions, for chiral analysis of product structures and mechanistics studies.3. Chiral recognition by modified carbohydrates, and the identification of separated products in chiral synthesis. From the Department of Physics, work is proposed on structure-property relationships in electro-optic crystals, including detailed structure analysis, and the characterisation of novel species with applications as non-linear optical materials.
