Summary on Grant Application Form
The determination of age from fish scales provides a labour intensive problem which typifies many commercial biological tasks. Although not yet automated, the problem is now potentially solvable through newly-developed methods. The research will build on work in multi-scales feature banks based on S-Gabor filters and is highly likely to provide generic methods that will be shown to be easily applicable in many biological problems. Our partnership with NRA and Synoptics will provide us with a rich array of problems requiring similar methods which, through the transfer of technology to the industrial partners, will be widely applied in many domains. The data and experience that NRA will bring to the project will permit us to assess the robustness of the methods and allow us to quantify the abilities of the methods.
