Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to develop the methodology for the operational integration of image analysis algorithms into a machine vision system. The task of inspecting textured colour surfaces in general and granite inspection in particular will be used as a vehicle for the proposed research and development work. The project is collaborative involving two industrial partners: one specialising in machine vision system manufacturing and the other representing the user industry. The research programme focuses on the following components:+ Techniques for machine vision algorithm error analysis will be investigated and developed in order to characterise the sensitivity of the algorithmic solution to various sources of errors caused by [1] software being ported to a platform with different numerical precision, [2] making calls to software libraries delivering results with a lower numerical accuracy, [3] changes in the illumination conditions and, [4] image acquisition chain instability.+ Development of techniques for optimising the parameters of the vision algorithms based on the error sensitivity model, for use with the target hardware / software platform.+ Application of the novel operational integration methodology to the problem of colour texture surface inspection of granite slabs with the twofold aim of [a] optimising and characterising the performance of the visual inspection system currently being developed under a BRITE-EURAM Project 0496 AVIS to perform this task, and of [b] validating the general operational integration methodology developed.
