Recent laboratory work has shown that the rate of resolution of water-in-oil emulsions may be dramatically increased by injecting air bubbles into the emulsion whilst it is under the influence of an applied electric field. The project will examine ways of incorporating the air sparger into the electrode configuration of a pulsed DC continuous flow coalescer. Once a satisfactory design has been established the electrostatic coalescer will be tested using a standard emulsion of high stability. It is proposed to measure the percentage resolution of the emulsion with and without air injection for a range of emulsion and air flow rates. These experiments will be repeated at different operating temperatures and for a range of applied voltages and pulsation frequencies. The investigation is intended to provide the performance data necessary for a proper assessment of the new approach. The results will also indicate the relative influence of the independent variables on the rate of emulsion resolution. If the results are promising, a further application will be made to EPSRC to continue the investigation.
