Summary on Grant Application Form
A production and a prototype four-valve cylinder head, representing conventional and new generation combustion systems, will be mounted into a single-cylinder research engine having optical access for the application of laser Doppler and phase Doppler velocimetry, 2-D Mie scattering and laser-induced fluorescence. These techniques will allow information to be obtained about the fuel droplet and vapour distribution during induction and compression as well as the mean flow and turbulence around the time of ignition in the vicinity of the spark plug, which will be correlated with flame images, pressure development and exhaust hydrocarbon and NOx emission levels under a range of engine operating conditions.
