Summary on Grant Application Form
It has been discovered that it is possible to fabricate novel polymeric microstructures that show a negative Poisson's ratio. These auxetic polymers are a new class of materials which can have much enhanced mechanical properties; such as better shear moduli, indentation resistance and fracture toughness. In this project a range of novel auxetic polymers will be fabricated, in sufficient quantity to provide for a systematic characterisation of their mechanical performance. These tests will be performed to provide the rigorous data required to show the mechanical performance benefits of this new class of polymeric materials.
