Pump-priming funds are being sought to investigate a high frequency radiation source based on a novel electron multiplier effect in a GaAs nanostructure. A unique in situ fabrication process will be employed in collaboration with researchers at the University of Cambridge whereby a wafer can be laterally patterned with a focused ion beam during molecular beam epitaxial growth. Our calculations predict that this source could generate several microwatts of power at frequencies in excess of 1THz and will dramatically outperform existing solid state sources of high frequency radiation. Funds are being sought for a six month period during which prototype devices will be thoroughly at low frequencies. If at this point the figures of merit still look encouraging a full application will be made to the EPSRC to develop high frequency systems in collaboration with experts at the University of Bath and elsewhere.
