The proposed environment will be principally comprised of graphical configuration tools (for rapidly configuring/reconfiguring programs) a simulation engine (for simulating program execution on the proposed target platform), and facilities for behaviour visualisation (for observing program behaviour). The environment will be fully integrated to allow a rapid, efficient and highly flexible approach to the engineering of portable parallel software, and will fully interface to standard programming tools, such as parallel language compilers. The project is strongly supported by a number of industrial participants in the project, representing manufacturers of high-performance computer systems, software tool manufacturers, and application developers. These companies will steer the project, for example advising on user requirements, and provide technical support on the project, notably in the areas of interfacing to existing tools and systems.The applicants have considerable combined knowledge and expertise in this field, and in addition have the benefit of access to a state-of-the-art simulation workbench provided by one of he industrial collaborators (SES). This tool will facilitate the rapid development of a simulator-based environment capable of meeting the requirements of parallel systems engineers.
