Summary on Grant Application Form
Work already performed at the PAC has resulted in the development of several prototype software tools to aid the monitoring, management and modelling of parallel relational database systems. The objectives of the proposed work are to perform the research and development required to produce an integrated suite of software tools which:a. enable the straightforward construction of performance models of parallel database systems;b. provide facilities for the automatic calibration of such models; andc. enable rapid, accurate prediction of systems performance and identification of bottlenecks. The integrated environment for modelling parallel database systems will allow the construction of models to be performed in a few days rather than the months required at present. The availability of such a suite of tools will greatly facilitate the deployment of parallel systems for compute-intensive relational database applications.Independent evaluation of the value of the software generated in the proposed project will be performed by AT&T GIS, AT&T Istel, British Shoe Corporation and IBM UK.
