Our objective is to build an integrated visual programming toolkit for embedded parallel signal processing applications. We anticipate two principal users for the toolkit: it could either be used to scale and optimise parallel performance of the target application (emulation), or to speed-up time-consuming algorithm simulations (e.g. in image and speech coding). The toolkit will be based around a stylised generic parallel design methodology for image processing applications which we have already demonstrated, and will be developed in four stages:1. A survey to taxonomise the field of embedded applications in terms of their compatibility with our parallel design model.2. Development and refinement of the model so as to improve the accuracy of its analytical performance prediction.3. Development of software tools that utilise our model to aid parallel decomposition of embedded applications.4. Integration of these tools within an existing signal processing CAD suite.Throughout the project the emphasis will be on evaluating the tools which are developed using embedded signal processing applications supplied by our industrial collaborators.
