The key objective is to gather information to design microcellular mobile radio systems to support vast numbers of users and the multimedia services that will be required for third generation personal communication networks. Secondary objectives are microcellular system studies, and the realisation of a microcellular test-bed.Progress:The project is in the start-up phase with the participants involved in the design of the microcellular test-bed (MTB). The MTB will consist of a base station controller (BSC) housed in the Electronics and Computer Science Department and connected to remote radio ports (RPs) via a fixed network. The RPs will establish both indoor and outdoor microcells in buildings, streets and areas of the Southampton University campus. The fixed network being considered will extend the existing campus optical network so that RPs can be easily relocated about a building when performing microcellular experiments. We are also investigating microwave fixed links to cover buildings that do not have optical connections. Time division multiple access (TDMA) with dynamic channel allocation (DCA) will be used to provide multimedia communications in a number of packet formats. The transmissions will be in the vicinity of 1.8 GHz. Studies are in progress relating to protocol stacks, how to design the BSC and RPS, and the architecture for low cost mobile stations (MSs).
