Stability is probably the most important issue in Z-pinch physics. We are proposing a four year theoretical research programme on this subject, with the aim of providing conclusive and definitive results on Z-pinch stability and to suggest directions for the experimental programme. It continues a very fruitful theory programme on this subject at Imperial College. We have recently developed techniques for solving the important problem of large ion Larmor radius (kinetic) linear stability. Our main concern is to complete this work and to tackle the question of nonlinear kinetic stability. Until this is done the stability of the Z-pinch will reamin one of the unsolved problems of plasma physics. Several other related topics have been identified.
