Summary on Grant Application Form
1. The construction of the Jubilee Line Extension provides the opportunity to fill a number of important gaps in knowledge about the behaviour of the ground due to tunnelling and the response of buildings and services to tunnelling induced subsidence.2. The best available instrumentation for the measurement of horizontal and vertical ground displacements, together with some stress cells and piezometers, will be installed at a 'green field' site in London clay on the route of the Jubilee Line Extension. 3. The measurements will be used to check and improve existing methods of predicting ground movements around tunnels. In particular the validity of using superposition for predicting the effects of more than one tunnel will be assessed.4. Combining the measurements with a second 'green field' site in Woolwich and Reading beds (funded by LUL) will permit the influence of the geological profile to be assessed.5. The results will provide essential reference data for studies of the response of buildings being carried out by LUL and IC to tunnel induced ground movements and methods for building protection.
