Summary on Grant Application Form
i) To identify manager roles for managing multiservice broadband networks and multimedia applications, in terms of the policies which constitute those roles.ii) To investigate the issues relating to detection of conflicts between policies for a single role or between policies for different roles which result from overlapping responsibility.iii) To develop and evaluate tools to enable the specification of management roles and analysis of policy conflicts.Progress:A manager role is defined as the set of authorisation and obligation policies for which a particular manager position is the subject. A role thus identifies the authority, responsibility, functions and interactions, associated with a position within an organisation. The role refers to a manager position rather than a particular person, because people are frequently assigned to new roles, and it would be very time consuming to change policies which reference that person. A person may be assigned to one or more roles and multiple individuals can share a single role. The project has only been running for a few months and the RA has not yet been employed. We have had discussions with partners in a related project funded by British Telecom to identify requirements for manager roles for broadband networks. We have been trying to identify potential relationships between roles e.g. delegation, responsibility for, responsibility to and peer relationships. Our policies do not really cope with complex multi-role synchronisation and interaction protocols. We have been looking at artificial intelligence and enterprise modelling techniques to see if they can be of help in modelling these interactions. The ATM switch to give us access to SuperJANET has been delivered by the fibre connections to the Imperial College switch have not yet been installed. A multi media workstation has been ordered but not yet delivered.
