Summary on Grant Application Form
To understand the requirements for group working in scientific visualisation. To analyse the opportunities through practical experience on a number of case studies.Progress:A first reference model for collaborative visualisation has been created. This is based on the traditional visualisation model (proposed by Haber and McNabb) in which data passes through a pipeline of processes towards a pictorial realisation. Our extension allows data to be transferred between collaborators, and also allows processes in a pipeline to be jointly controlled. A prototype system exploiting this model has been created. This has been achieved by extending the existing modular visualisation system, IRIS Explorer (developed by NAG Ltd.), so that it can be used in a multi-user mode. System trials have been carried out not only at Leeds, but also across JANET to Manchester. This first version is now being evaluated by scientific colleagues at Leeds, who have previously only been able to collaborate by working together at the same workstation. This evaluation has highlighted some limitations in our approach: better tools are needed to allow one collaborator know what another is doing; a means of jointly creating visualisation pipelines is also needed. The investigation of these issues is our current work, and will lead to an enhanced version of our present system.
