One of the major problems with polymer composites is that, while long fibres are needed for optimal properties, the formability is greatly impaired when the fibres are continuous. In practice, it is likely that, by breaking the fibres up into suitable lengths, important improvements in formability can be achieved without significant degradation of mechanical properties. However, the production of formable composite material with suitable fibre content presents difficulties. In the present programme, such material will be generated by laser processing so as to create arrays of small perforations in undirectional laminae (continuous aligned fibres in a thermoplastic matrix). The scientific programme is divided into two parts. Firstly, the effect on formability of various perforation patterns will be studied under different deformation conditions. Secondly, the mechanical properties of the composite material will be measured before and after perforation and deformation processing. These two lines of research will be linked by microstructural studies. One of the main concerns will be in relating test data to the processing and properties of the demonstrator components.
