Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a coordinated programme covering a wide range of studies of solid polymers, especially oriented polymers. It seeks to develop an understanding of the deformation process in polymers and routes to the production of new highly oriented polymers. In addition, structure/property relationships are sought, particularly in the areas of mechanical, electrical and transport properties. Structural characterisation under stress, utilising x-ray diffraction, NMR and infrared and Raman spectroscopy, will be pursued to aid the interpretation of elastic, nonlinear elastic and plastic deformation processes. It is further proposed to investigate new infrared techniques for the characterisation of orientation suitable for absorbance of polar polymers will be investigated with particular reference to the measurement of orientation in poled polymers.
