This research proposal seeks to identify and understand the photochemical attributes of silicon backbone polymers at the molecular level by developing novel characterisation strategies. These will include the following: (i) in situ mass spectrometry for identifying photodesorbed species; (ii) surface derivatisation in conjunction with XPS as a means for determining the density of free radical centres following polysilane activation; (iii) examination of treated polymer surface topography by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and low voltage SEM; and (iv) evaluation of the molecular weight distribution before and after UV irradiation by TOF-SIMS and AFM. Having established a thorough physicochemical understanding of the photodegradative nature of polysilanes, the second stage of the research programme will seek to exploit this inherently unique surface chemistry. Special emphasis will be placed on the synthesis of novel structures. These will include the following: (i) surface grafting of polysilanes using photochemical and plasma techniques via radical initiated polymerisation, for possible application in adhesion enhancement at polymer - non polymer interfaces; (ii) the use of low temperature glow discharges for altering the silicon backbone substituents in order to attain good gas barrier; and (iii) development of nanoscale molecular sensors via the incorporation of metal centres into oxidised polysilane surfaces.
