This project seeks to develop an architecture for a machine vision system which uses high-speed packet-switched serial links as its sole communication technology. Such a system may include multiple general-purpose CPUs as well as specialised frame rate hardware for operations such as convolution, correlation and edge detection. It will support multiple, simultaneous transmission of both raw image data and symbolic scene descriptions in an asynchronous, flow-controlled manner via a packet-switched crossbar device. The aim is to provide a design framework for commercial vision systems which is open, modular, flexible, scalable and cost-effective. New components will be developed to allow specialised frame rate image processing hardware to interface to serial packet data streams. Protocols will be implemented to allow image regions and control parameters to be transmitted via the serial links. A method of multicasting data from one producer to multiple consumers will be developed.A demonstrator system based on Inmos D/S links, the T9000 transputer and the C104 crossbar will be built. AIVRU's existing vision runtime environment will be ported onto the machine and used to demonstrate simple vision applications including a stereo surveillance system.
