Summary on Grant Application Form
Our pilot experiments have recently demonstrated a novel technique for generating highly ordered molecular arrays in ultra-thin fluid jets. Molecular ordering is seen to have a profound influence on the optical properties of such systems as observed by fluorescence lifetime and anisotropy data. This proposal concerns a full experimental programme to investigate the fundamental physical interactions underlying these phenomena and to understand their role in modifying both linear and nonlinear optical responses. To this end we propose to construct a polarised single and two photon time resolved single photon counting system to be used in conjunction with the current fourwave mixing apparatus in our laboratory. This will allow a complete characterisation of the linear and nonlinear orientation dependent optical and photophysical properties of a wide range of anisotropic molecular probes including both gain, saturable and reverse saturable media. These techniques will allow us to determine the form of the angle dependent intermolecular potential responsible for the alignment and to test current theories of angular relaxation in anisotropic fluid media.
