Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to construct a virtual multicomputer in order to support the prototyping, development and tuning of distributed applications. A [physical] multicomputer is a number of interconnected heterogeneous computing systems - workstations, shared or distributed memory multiprocessors, array processors - using whatever resources are available. A virtual muliticomputer is a computing system providing as many instances of the virtual abstractions of these resources as the problem requires - it is a soft architecture to support future distributed applications, transcending physical hardware details. Using the outputs from our past projects [GR/F63183 and GR/G31048] and the expertise of the partners in distributed programming and concurrent language design and implementation, this timely project will construct tools for the support and performance analysis of a virtual multicomputer and the development and tuning of applications for it.
