Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme proposes an experimental and theoretical study of the incorporation and mixing of small proportions of a low viscosity fluid into a fluid of very much higher viscosity and the two combined behaving as viscous fluids so that no turbulence can be achieved. The cavity transfer mixer (CTM) is identified as the equipment best suited for this operation as it is an established distributive mixer with a potential for dispersive mixing. Computer flow simulations will be used to analyse the contributions of distributive and dispersive mixing in a CTM as a function of operating conditions and mixer design. This should yield to a new CTM design with a superior and predictable dispersive as well as distributive mixing abilities. Both the standard CTM and the new design will be tested to assess the effect of viscosity and concentration ratios (minor/major) as well as operating CTM rotor speeds and throughputs. Non-Newtonian behaviour will be accounted for in this study which uses a sophisticated image analysis technique to measure the degree of mixing of minor/major along the CTM designs.
