Summary on Grant Application Form
We have recently discovered a new mode of magnetic excitations in Pr metal, which cannot be understood within the standard model of rare-earth magnetism1. A systematic study of these excitations and the unexplained quasielastic central peak as a function of magnetic field and temperature will be made in Pr and Pr1-x Rx single crystals (with R=Ce,La,Tm). The onset of antiferromagnetic ordering in Pr occurs at TN 50mK. We propose to study the magnetic structure down to 10mK, examining also the behaviour of the central peak at temperatures well below TN.In parallel, we propose to extend our work on the candidate multichannel Kondo system UxY1-xPd3 to investigate further the criteria for the existence of the non-Fermi liquid state around x=0.2, by examining the magnetic response with other trivalent and quadrivalent dopants including Sc,Pr and Th. We also propose to extend our work on the UTX, U3T3X4 and YbTX materials. A principal aim is to correlate the existence of low-lying crystal field levels with the heavy fermion properties of these systems.1 K N Clausen, K A McEwen, J Jensen and A R Mackintosh (Phys Rev Letters, to be published).
