A series of low band gap semiconducting polymers will be synthesised based on cyclopenta [2, 1-b:3, 4-b'] dithiophene-1-one and 4-dicyanomethylene-4H-cyclopenta [2, 1-b: 3, 4-b'] dithiophene. The UV-VIS-near IR absorption of both the monomer and polymer will be compared with molecular mechanics calculations. Scanning electron microscopy will be used to determine the best growth conditions for the polymers thus ensuring that only uniform, high quality films undergo electrical characterisation and device formation. The optical band gap of the polymers will be determined from photoconduction measurements. Accumulation mode MISFET devices will be fabricated in which the semiconducting polymer forms the active layer. The characteristics of the devices will give both the polarity and mobility of the majority carrier. MIS capacitors will be formed to investigate inversion and hence confirm the presence of minority carriers in the polymer. Schottky barrier diodes will be formed and their admittance characteristics measured over a range of temperature and frequency so as to investigate charge trapping effects in the depletion region. From such measurements the commercial potential of these low band gap polymers may be evaluated.
