The objective of the project is to facilitate the fabrication of novel nano-engineered biomolecular and molecular electronic materials. The project seeks to determine mechanisms of degradation induced by keV electron beam irradiation of self-assembled monolayers formed by adsorption of thiol compounds onto gold surfaces. Processes leading to removal of adsorbate molecules are to be explored. The conditions under which these processes are maximised are to be determined, with a view to optimising the lithographic removal of adsorbates to reveal the clean substrate. Lithographics modification of self-assembled monolayers will be explored using SIMS, XPS, STM, SEM and AFM. Functionalisation of self-assembled monolayers by attachment of biomolecules with significant electronic properties will be explored. Attachment of other molecules with electronic properties will also be explored (including attachment of silicon phthalocyanines to oxidised silicon surfaces). Lithographic methods will be employed in order to form patterned self0assembled monolayers to which molecules of interest (cytochrome c, ferritin, desthiobiotin-streptavidin and PCSiO) may be attached in micron- and, ultimately, nanometre-scale structures).
