Summary on Grant Application Form
Development of a system for the catalytic asymmetric epoxidation of unfunctionalised alkenes is an important challenge of both academic and industrial importance. The use of novel, chiral iminium salts for this purpose will be examined. It has been shown that iminium salts for this purpose will be examined. It has been shown that iminiun salts may be oxidised to the corresponding oxaziridinium salts which are capable of effecting alkene epoxidation. Importantly, this system can operate catalytically in the chiral iminiun species, with stoichiometric inorganic oxidant. This project will examine systematically the effect in the epoxidation reaction of the presence of asymmetry at various positions in the oxazirdinium species - chirality in the amine, the carbonyl portion, and the influence of the ring stereochemistry will be investigated. Well-defined structures will be used to facilitate rationalisation and prediction of results. As well as a useful catalytic asymmetric epoxidation system, it is hoped that an understanding of the steric and stereoelectronic factors operating in the epoxidation reaction will be gained.
