Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this research project is to develop tools that can be used to quantify the total environmental impact of chemical emissions from industrial processes, in particular those subject to Integrated Pollution Control. This will be achieved by first developing the basic principles of an environmental index. At the same time, methodologies for the design of a new plant and clean retrofits for dynamic chemical processes will be developed along the line of those currently under development for continuous processes. The principle of the environmental index will then be combined with the process design methodologies and used to evaluate example flowsheets that have arisen previously from meeting specific targets at minimum cost as opposed to minimum environmental impact.
