Summary on Grant Application Form
Interest in far-infra-red optical sources is driven by the many potential applications of such devices. the present project aims to study semiconductor quantum well structures which permit the creation of intersubband population inversion with the ultimate aim of identifying an optimised structure which can support intersubband laser action at far-infra-red wavelengths. The main thrust of the project work is theoretical with emphasis given to determining an optimum material system and coupled quantum well structure for achieving population inversion. Attention would centre on triple quantum well structures in the GaAs//AiGaAs and GaAs/InGaAs systems; work at Bath has already shown that such structures are capable of producing intersubband population inversion. Other structures and material systems will be considered as necessary. In the theoretical work it is also intended to identify any fundamental material limitations on the performance of the optimised structure.
