For high flux polyacrylate (PA) membranes the support layer has already been shown to be significant. The initial aim of the proposed work is to gain further experimental data on the effect of the support, to understand the processes involved and to obtain a satisfactory model. Following a small amount of further work on the coating process customised spiral wound modules will be produced by Acumem. These modules will be evaluated using pilot scale equipment. A module will also be coupled to bench scale equipment to fulfil a subsidiary objective. Then the ratio of membrane area to feed volume can be varied to estimate in conjunction with atomic adsorption spectroscopy the rate of caesium ion removal under various conditions. Whilst the results obtained from this study will influence the range of possible future uses for PA membranes, currently the main barrier to exploitation is the expensive nature of the ceramic support. The project will concentrate upon the development of a potentially cost effective and robust alternative.
