We have, over the last 16 months, demonstrated the feasibility and potential of excimer laser ablation deposition (LAD) of magnetic thin films. We now wish to optimise and exploit the technique. We propose to develop the LAD facility in two directions; further evaluation of the technique itself and the growth and characterisation of thin film magnetic materials. Firstly we wish to investigate the effect of changing the laser wavelength on the structural and magnetic properties of a range of films. We then wish to expand our activities in the fields of rare-earth iron compounds, magneto-optic materials, giant magnetoresistance materials and soft magnetic materials. We propose to prepare films of samarium iron and samarium iron nitride followed by other rare-earth iron compounds, alloys and multilayers. We will seek a one step preparation route for barium ferrite films. We will grown granular and multilayer films of cobalt silver and iron silver and evaluate their magnetoresistance properties. We will also continue to evaluate amorphous metglass films to optimise their soft magnetic properties.
