This study will consider the realisation of reduced-complexity, high-throughput fixed-function circuits typical in video signal processing applications. The problems of efficiently realised DSP algorithms of this type with diverse design constraints (especially using ASIC technology) are immense and can often result in sub-optimum implementations. We believe that the potential f genetic algorithms in this respect is great and propose to apply enhanced versions of our own recently reported expansive coding method and other new approaches to this problem. The directed graph and its associated matrix representation where appropriate will be of prime concern. The results of this project will provide benefits in:i) developing a framework for the application of GAs,ii) facilitating rapid design of optimum DSP circuitsiii) enabling exploitation of area/time/power/accuracy trade-offs.
