1. To develop a core IE system comprising a general architecture for text -extraction (GATE) as well as a base system - VIE.2. To solicit participation by other UK sites by providing VIE for comparison over standard corpora and inviting contributions of modules and test data.3. To make advances in IE by concentrating on the automatic acquisition of linguistic and domain knowledge from dictionaries and corpora.4. To exploit the technology developed by working with industrial collaborators to encourage the development of specific information extraction applications.5. To conform to the MUC standards for performance evaluation and take part in future MUC trials.
