Summary on Grant Application Form
Theoretical models for dilatational yielding in rubber toughened plastics will be tested and developed further. The first step will be to test the recently proposed model for cavitation of the rubber particles by measuring critical volume strains at which cavitation is observed in materials containing particles of various sizes and size ranges. Methods for observing particle cavitation will be tensile dilatometry, light transmission, electron microscopy and generation of irreversible damage through bond rupture in the rubber particles. The kinetics and mechanisms of subsequent yielding will then be studied using tensile dilatometry, electron microscopy and light scattering measurements.
