Summary on Grant Application Form
The theoretical study of non-linear spatio temporal dynamics in GAl - x Al x As p-n junctions incorporating a single quantum well in the depletion region will be carried out for electric fields applied parallel to the layers. Previous experimental work has shown that the device is a simple and efficient light emitter. The emitted light intensity is independent of the polarity of the applied voltage and only two point contacts are required. The understanding of the carrier dynamics in the device is, therefore, of fundamental importance to model the experimental results and to optimise the performance. Furthermore, novel physical phenomena such as the self-inflicted impact ionisation which occurs as a result of real space transfer of electrons from the quantum well into a region of very high electric fields will also be investigated.
