Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is designed to develop the syntheses methodology for a series of polyimides with novel structures and to synthesise representative examples of materials in order to make a preliminary determination of their properties and to assess their potential. The polyimides are functionalised polyimides and grafted and segmented hydrophilic copolyimides. The project will involve developing functionalisation reactions and the control of molecular weight and terminal functionality in polyimide oligomers. Graft copolymers will be synthesised by attaching preformed monofunctional hydrophilic chains to functionalised polyimides; possible degradation reactions during functionalisation will require investigation. Segmented copolymers will be prepared from polyimide oligomers and preformed difunctional hydrophilic chains.
