The long term objective of this research project is to devise an acoustic technique for the indirect determination of the pressure losses due to elements in a ventilation system. such a technique could be employed to enable ventilation systems to be commissioned more efficiently than at present. The technique could also be used to provide continuous information regarding the state of all in-duct elements for an adaptive ventilation control system. As this would not require electronic data paths such a system could be very cost effective.The first objective of this preliminary study is to establish relationships between the acoustic impedances of in-duct elements and their pressure loss characteristics. Both laboratory measurements and computer simulation will be employed in this work. The use of low levels of pseudo random noise injected into the system will then be investigated as a means of extracting information regarding the state of individual elements in complex duct systems.
