The properties of high temperature superconductors, and devices made from them, are very strongly affected by the motion of magnetic vortex lines which thread through them Most existing measurements have involved the average behaviour of very many magnetic flux lines, and are thus not able to correlate the behaviour of particular vortices with particular features of the material. We will develop SQUID-based scanning magnetic microscope techniques for imaging the vortices with high spatial, field and time resolution, and will apply these techniques in parallel with topographical imaging. We will study the variety of behaviours a vortex can display, including trapping, elastic motion, hysteretic hopping and rapid motion. By studying a variety of different specimens and structures, including superconducting electronic devices, we will assess what materials, preparation techniques and designs are best suited to, for example, low noise magnetometers, r.f. coils and flux-flow devices. Additionally, we will explore the application of the high-sensitivity magnetic microscope to measurements on weakly magnetic materials.
