Summary on Grant Application Form
The work is aimed at exploring the efficacy of amorphous silicon compounds and organo-silicon polymers deposited on condenser tube materials by glow discharge to promote permanent dropwise condensation of steam. 1080 specimens of admiralty brass, s.s. and titanium will be screened for contact angle in water, mechanical strength and durability, the attainment and maintenance of dropwise condensation and for heat transfer coefficient. This will be followed by testing a small bundle of tubes treated with the most successful surface in a steam condenser shell and tube rig capable of operating under vacuum and vapour shear conditions. The project will conclude by estimating the cost of the proposed treatment applied to full sized condenser tubes.
